There Is No "One Key" To Great Dental Health

Information On Dealing With A Broken Tooth

If you break your tooth, you want to know how to care for it until you are able to get in to see your dentist. You will also want to familiarize yourself with some of the different treatment options available to you for broken tooth repair. This article is full of information that takes you through the process of caring for your broken tooth and having it repaired.

What to do if you break your tooth

If you break your tooth, you should try to find the broken piece and put it in a small baggie so you can bring it with you to the dentist. If the remainder of your tooth is loose, you may feel the need to wiggle it with your tongue; don't do this! If the tooth has a sharp piece that's going to cut your lip, cheek or tongue, you should put some dental wax on it to protect your mouth.

If it is causing you pain, put an ice pack on your cheek or lip adjacent to the broken tooth. Take some over the counter pain reliever for pain. Or if there is a good deal of swelling, then you can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory.

You should stick to eating soft foods that don't require much chewing until you have gone to the dentist to have the tooth repaired.

Treatments for a broken tooth

Veneers – Your dentist may suggest repairing your tooth with a veneer if the break is fairly severe. This is a porcelain covering that will be bonded on to your tooth. It will be shaped to fit against your other teeth and shaded to match them. A veneer will look and feel like a natural tooth and others won't be able to tell that the veneer isn't your natural tooth.

Bonding – If the tooth isn't badly broken, your dentist may suggest repairing it with bonding material. Your dentist will shape bonding material that matches the color of your surrounding teeth on the broken one. Just as with veneers, the result will be a natural looking and feeling tooth.

Filling – If you have slightly broken a back tooth that can't be seen easily when you smile, your dentist may suggest repairing it with a filling. The filling will protect your tooth, and it will offer you a more affordable option.

Now that you know how to deal with a broken tooth and some of your options to have it repaired, you may not be so stressed about the situation.
